18 years on and nowhere close to the number of Brexit posts.

Where were you when you heard about it? What was your reaction? Are you persuaded by any of the conspiracy theories?

I was working in clerkenwell and saw a group of people huddled round the window of an ad agency that had a tv on the window playing bbc. There must have been ten or fifteen people there, just stopped what they were doing to watch

At work, someone said a plane crashed into the twin towers so thought it was an accident and thought nothing more of it...until I arrived home and turned on the telly.

At work ready for Reading away in the cup. Drinking in Putney then getting a train to the game which we didn't know was going to be on or not. I think we lost on penalties that night

Saw a post on 2-Bob saying there'd been a plane crash in New York. As I read it a colleague shouted out they'd read about it on the BBC website. We all poured into the meeting room and the MD got out a (previously unseen) telly. And there we stayed for the rest of the day.

On the way home on my bike I saw a small crowd shouting abuse at the mosque at the Hackney end of Lea Bridge Road.

Conspiracy theorists can fuck off. The well-worn method of helping stupid angry people feel like they're intelligent. Tom from Wembley will be along shortly to prove this by ruining another thread.

Sat at my desk on the trading floor surrounded by tv screens watching the second plane go in and thinking it was a replay of the first. Tried later that afternoon calling a trading counterpart in NYC who i spoke to several times everyday to do trade reconciliation and not being able to get through. Called their london operation to be told they were all located on the top two floors of the first tower hit and as far as they knew they were all gone.

I was working on the open top buses and broke the news to quite a few Americans.

One bloke who was probably military said two words:-

Bin Laden.

Conspiracy nuts would say this bloke was a US government lizard spook planted in London to spread rumours and deflect people from investigating the true culprits.

On here.... and the information on here was coming quicker than it was on TV... no one knew it was a terrorist attack to begin with... soon became apparent... lots of rumours about London as well.... Mrs was 5 months preggers at the time... told her it would be wise to get home ... still seems totally surreal watching those two towers come down...

If anyone has not seen it ... 102 minutes that changed America.... still the best film/doc seen on the event

Getting ready for school, and would always watch the news as I did. Did not end up going.

Cousin was living there, going to school. Took what seemed like forever to get a hold of him.

Wanting to work in international politics, including the Middle East at the time. Change a lot of the course of my life, probably.

Interesting time for a lot of Lebanese friends I had.

Was looking for a new TV at the time and was inside Dixons watching the first thinking a small plane had an accident. Went home turned the TV on for more information and saw the second plane hit.

NS is right that's a hard hitting documentary as is The Day the World Changed which interviews a lot of the politicians and responders who were involved. Ben Sliney who was Head Air Traffic Controller was in his post for the first time that day.

Bad communication between everyone in the period leading up to it. The FBI and CIA didn't talk to each other, neither did the Fire Crews and Police from what I've heard. And why the FBI didn't act on a call from the Florida Flying School saying they had a Middle Eastern Student who wasn't bothered about learning how to land I'll never know unless that's an urban myth.
